This image was taken from the photosphere on Google Earth 9/12/2024. It shows a group of tourists on a boat looking at and photographing the Grey Glacier in Chile.

Grey Glacier is a large ice sheet that is located in Patagonia, Chile, within Torres del Paine National Park. It is approximately 17 miles in length and 4 miles in width. The reason that this glacier is an ice sheet is due to the fact that in this area the amount of snow is greater than the melting process. Essentially this means that the ice is just accumulating and growing bigger rather than melting. The ice breaks into pieces that float in a lake named Grey Lake. The surrounding area offers picturesque/ scenic views of mountains, forests, and rivers. This type of glacier is known as what would be called a Valley Glacier. The glacier is constantly changing due to the warming temperatures from climate change, and unfortunately, it has been slowly shrinking over time. This can also be explained by the plasticity of the Grey Glacier. This means that the ice shape is changing over time due to the pressure of the layers of ice. Even though it is getting smaller and changing shape (into a valley shape), it is still a huge and powerful natural wonder. The Grey Glacier moves slowly, it moves approximately a few feet per day, as the ice flows downhill from the mountains. This also explains why it is seen as a valley glacier. As it grows it also flows downhill, which causes the glacier to form or carve out its valley-like shape. Despite the shrinking changes, it remains a key part of Patagonia’s wild and beautiful landscape. One thing that sticks out to most people about this glacier is the beautiful blue color. The Grey Glacier has been around for thousands of years. It is a dream destination for scientists and researchers. There is plenty we can learn from a natural phenomenon such as the Grey Glacier.

Problem

One main problem about this glacier is that climate change is affecting how fast the ice is melting. The way we can prevent any of this from happening is to stop polluting the earth. Another cause of this happening is visitors are walking all over the glaciers and causing damage making the glacier melt more every time someone steps on it. When the glacier melts, it creates toxic water that falls off of it and lands in nearby areas infecting living organisms that surround it.

Explanation

A notable explanation for this problem is managing tourism. We can protect our glaciers by creating awareness for others. Such as explaining the cause and effect of what tourism does to our glaciers. Another explanation could be setting regulations for people who want to visit these landmarks. Examples are how many people can visit a year or regulations that permit minimal physical contact.
