Activity 2.3.1 Ranchers, Anglers, and Beavers
1. Exploratory
The research evidence supported the use of the grazing management and beavers for riparian restoration. The Beavers would create the dams, which would then cause the groundwater to elevate, which promotes the vegetation recovery, giving the plants time to regenerate. The recovery would improve the quality of the water, which then, in return, causes less erosion and supports biodiversity. So basically, the beavers enhance the health of the riparian health by helping the wetland form.(Fesenmyer)
2. Diagnostic
The reason that this occurs is that the grazing is impacting the riparian zones because it reduces the vegetation cover. this causes more erosion and degradation of the habitats. by the beavers building the dams, they are able to mitigate the drought effects, which allows the animal species to recover.(Fesenmyer)
3. Cause and Effect
If it is implemented to control the grazing and beaver activity, the affected zones would then see an increase in the vegetation cover and improved water retention. this is beneficial because it makes it stronger to extreme climates.
If the grazing and beaver activity remains uncontrolled, then the riparian ecosystems will face worse degradation, which would also lead to having worse water quality, more erosion, and habitat loss.
4. Priority
The most important issue would be balancing human activity and land use with ecological restoration. we would need to make sure that the processes like the beaver recolonizing and rotational grazing are encouraged in order to improve the riparian health.
5. Application
The approaches seen would be able to help the land managers be able to use more nature-based solutions instead of having super expensive infrastructures for the water and habitats. this applies to me would be to adopt some of the strategies or even participate in the efforts to make the nature-based solutions more of an option. it is related to culture in ways like that the indigenous communities have been using these practices for a very long time.(Fesenmyer)
6. Critical
this challenges assumptions because of the idea that beavers are able to do better than the traditional restoration methods, which means that it will bring less human involvement. it just shows that nature has a way to be able to take care of itself without needing manmade intervention. I'd say this did change my thinking because it shows nature as something that doesn't really need to be controlled and finding that fine balance.
